You may not want to have to think about the garden over Christmas but now is the time to plan for the better weather. Pot up some primulas or polyanthus as there is nothing more cheerful! All you need to get started is a wide, shallow pot to put half a dozen in. Plant them with the leaves almost touching. It is always better to use one colour to a pot.

It is much easier to mend a fence when the leaves are down and the stems of the perennials are down and you can see what’s what. Better to get that waggling fence post fixed before the neighbouring post breaks too and then a section of fence falls over in the summer.
